THE STUDENTS’ SCHEME
INTRODUCTION
In pursuit of its Charter – mandate “to propagate ‘best professional management practices’ in Nigeria”, NIM is running a STUDENTS’ SCHEME adopting a strategy of “Catching them young” with a view to inculcating best management practices in the youths starting with those in the tertiary educational institutions who can understand and assimilate the professionalism in management. The Scheme gives students the opportunity of professional membership which, in several tertiary educational institutions in Nigeria, is pre-requisite to the completion of the student’s academic work.

In agreement with the school authorities, NIM has commenced a Students’ Scheme in some Universities and Polytechnics/Colleges of Technology where 300 – 400 level (or HND I and II) students are registered to undertake tuition and write an examination leading to the GRADUATE membership and the PROFICIENCY CERTIFICATE IN MANAGEMENT of the Institute. Ultimately the Scheme will be run in ALL Nigerian Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Technology that graduate students at BSc/BA/HND/Post Graduate Diploma levels.

The Operation of the Scheme
The Scheme operates in three (3) stages:
(i) The Training Process - students receive lectures in their schools in preparation for the examinations. Tuition can be any of the following forms:
a. The school organizes week-end lectures for their students in conformity with the Institute’s syllabuses.
b. The school builds the Students’ Scheme syllabuses into the ‘General Studies’ curriculum so that interested students who register for the Scheme can attend lectures as with their normal courses.
c. The school can organize lectures for interested students during school vacation periods.
There are Study Packs for the Scheme; students can purchase them to aid their studies.

(ii) Writing the Examinations - examinations are written every May/June and November/December at designated Examination Centres located at conducive places all over the country, under the invigilation of appointed persons. Answer scripts are marked by appointed examiners and results are collated and announced by the Institute.

(iii) The Induction Process - Successful students are required to attend INDUCTION PROGRAMMES organized for them upon successful completion of their University/Polytechnic
academic programmes and certified by their school authorities. At the induction programme, each student will obtain the Institute’s PROFICIENCY CERTIFICATE IN MANAGEMENT
and the GRADUATE MEMBERSHIP CERTIFICATE.

APPLICATION FORM
Every student who is interested in the Scheme is required to obtain the Institute’s prescribed application for =N=500.00 (Five Hundred Naira only), complete and return it with required documents of proof of studentship, to the Institute through the Head of Department and/or Students’ Scheme Coordinator.

ELIGIBILITY FOR PARTICIPATING IN THE SCHEME
University undergraduates at minimum 300 level and Polytechnic students at minimum HND 1 (i.e. 400 level) are registered to take special tuition arranged for them in their schools and write the Graduate Membership Examinations when ready.

The Scheme is open to ALL students, but we suggest that your school starts first with Management Science students and later include other students who are interested in the Scheme.

SYLLABUS & STUDY PACKS
The Syllabuses and Study Packs for the courses of the Scheme will be made available to students through their Heads of Departments or the School Coordinator of the Scheme.

EXAMINATIONS
Management Professional Examinations (MPEs) of all grades, including that of the Student’s Scheme, are written in MAY and NOVEMBER every year. Examination Centres and invigilators are approved by the Institute.

Registration for examination costs =N=850.00 per subject.
Re-sit courses are at the same rate but will include =N=1,000.00 administrative charges.

BENEFITS TO THE STUDENTS
Students who write the exams under this Scheme enjoy the following benefits:
1. Possession of the Institute’s Proficiency in Management and GRADUATE Membership Certificates (as additional professional qualifications) while still in school.

2. The Scheme accords students the opportunity of professional membership, especially in schools where students are expected to belong to at least a professional body as a pre-requisite to the successful completion of their academic works.

3. The possession of these professional certificates enhance their employability.

4. They have knowledge and skills of establishment and management of small scale businesses and can be self-employed, thus gaining an earlier start in life.

5. As members of the Institute, they enjoy ALL membership benefits and can flaunt their association with major decision-makers in government and business industries.

6. Students enrolled in the Scheme can be engaged as Industrial Attachees with Corporate Members of the Institute where vacancies exist.

7. Upon graduation and completion of the NYSC programme, they stand good chance of being absorbed into corporate organizations as Management Trainees.

8. The Overall Best Student in the Scheme will be given an award by the Institute.

9. Students enrolled in the Scheme can enjoy the benefit of the Entrepreneurship Training of the Africa Leadership Form (ALF) with a soft grant by CBN to start their own businesses
.
